The Red Paintings on touring with Smashing Pumpkins' Nicole Fiorentino and combining art with music...amongst other things

Posted on November 24, 2013 at 6:20 PM

The Red Paintings are set to hit Manchester on 4th December supporting Mindless Self Indulgence at The Ritz.   They are renowned for their unique stage shows and combining art with music.  The Rock Fairy caught up with the band to find out more about them and what we can expect when they come to Manchester...

Smashing Pumpkins bassist Nicole Fiorentino has just joined you on bass duties. How did that come about and what are you hoping she can bring to the band that you didn't already have?

She was tipped off about us looking for a US bass player and reached out to chat about the project. We had a great meet up and realised we had a lot in common. Smashing Pumpkins just finished a tour, so it was a good time for Nicole to play in some new projects. We went into jams with her for our first appearance for on a US TV music show which was a blast. She brings loads of experience and an abundant amount of incredible tour stories with Billy Corgan and the gang, Veruca Salt and much more. She is just such a lovely person and we love her energy.

Your stage show looks very unique, combining art and music. What’s the driving force behind that concept?

It’s always been important to me to share talented artists’ work and bring a deeper connection between ourselves and the audience, art and music. Since day one I’ve had a painter on stage. The stage shows are changing all the time. Each stage show is a reflection of the messages and concepts from the album and music videos. We have a 4 phase stage show concept for this album cycle that changes on each world tour till we run the album out of gas!

You’re accepting submissions from painters and human canvases to join your show. What do you look for in a submission?

We ask painters to send us examples of their work for some shows and then I’ll choose the artist based mostly on whether I connect with the artist or their work. I am a huge fan of both new and old art. We are constantly on the lookout for new stage painters and human canvases to join our shows. Email us at [email protected] to join our artistic delirium! Or check out to view the art created from all our shows and the info on how to apply.

Where in the world do you find people are most receptive to your style of performance?

To be honest, everywhere we go is fantastic. There really isn’t a place we have visited that we haven’t enjoyed ourselves playing.

How has your tour with Mindless Self Indulgence come about?

We toured with MSI in Australia a couple years ago. Then earlier this year, we joined them on what was a pretty epic USA tour. From that came the invitation to join them on this upcoming UK/EU tour - so pretty much a world tour with MSI! Funny enough the two bands together work really really well. They is a enough contrast between us both to add a really solid energy to each and every show and we find their fans go nuts with us right from the first paint brush stroke. For us as a band we can’t get enough of warming up the crowds for Jimmy and co.

Tell us about the idea behind your Robot Trilogy.

I wanted to show people that we could destroy numbers by using colour and that’s exactly what I did. “Join the rebellion – the Robots March Through Major Cities” was a performance art installation where we built giant robots and the band’s fans marched through the streets of major cities and towns to promote the ‘Destroy the Robots: Uprising’ release and tour. The message behind the tour is to be more conscious about the life we live and not become an average robotic society and live the lives dictated to us through major marketing ploys like McDonalds or Coca Cola for example. Many fans joined in - even bringing their own robot toys to celebrate.

Some pics of the marches in the different cities can be seen here:

The band are massive animal rights supporters. How do you combine your music with animal activism?

In many ways and we feel obligated to discuss such issues in today’s world. I guess you could say it’s our main mission in TRP more than anything to educate our audience. From on stage discussions and debates, to fundraiser shows with animal rights societies, to animal rebellion marches, we hit the city streets to educate people. We talk about the human effects on animals in zoos or testing laboratories, discussion on vegan and vegetarian diets on our forums and social media - that’s just a few ways we get the word out and play our part.

Your latest album is titled “The Revolution is Never Coming”. Talk to us about the idea behind the title.

It was pretty simple – your revolution won’t exist unless you get off your own arse and create it. This album encompasses what that may mean to a carbon life form like us humans.

There’s been talk of you releasing your album in space. Tell us more.

I won’t give too much away, but we are going to launch a large Geisha shaped helium balloon in 13 capital cities across the world during our world tour for the album. As well as this, we have much more going on around the release in Australia and the rest of the world. You have to dig deeper these days to get through to people! Keep an eye and an ear out.
